All our foals begin life with imprint training. They are handled extensively from birth. We like to take our foals for walks, teach them to stand tied, lift their feet, and practice loading in the horse trailer, always encouraging a courageous and friendly attitude.
Our yearlings are introduced to ground driving, lunge line work and very light harness work. They also enjoy being ponied for short excursions with older experienced horses. This gives them a great introduction to the outside world.
As they mature we like to start them in buggy. As horses excel in buggy work they are paired with an experienced team mate. The organic farm offers many opportunities for harness work. Spring cultivating has seen the making of several great teams. Brushing the fields, hauling rocks & logs all are jobs that need to be done and the fjords do it well.
Approaching the third year we start saddle work. We admire John Lyons round pen methods. We use the round pen for introducing saddle work. In the beginning training is always kept light and for short periods, fun for both horse and rider.
Our back yard is a part of Snowy Mountain wilderness. The mountain is a great training tool and playground. There are constant interactions with wildlife. Ungroomed trails teach a horse to be very coordinated picking their way thru rocks and logs. The horses get used to crossing rivers, bridges, climbing cliffs, going through bushes and our favourite, swimming. It's all fun and excitement.
We have a lot of fun and enjoyment training fjords. Fjords may look alike to the others but they are all individuals with personalities all their own. They are a gentle, calm, sweet natured breed of horse. We absolutely adore them.
